About us

The MacLeod family have lived at Fisherfield since the 1790’s when our ancestors were ejected from their traditional lands in Snizort.  Some of our ancestors went to Canada; whilst others remained and farmed the croft at 6 Fisherfield.  They lived in a small stone building called a blackhouse, close to the shore.

Gradually, as time passed our family moved away from the shore and built a wooden property called An-Airidh.  Our great aunt Sibby chose the name, with her mother, as she details in her book of memories growing up on the croft – if you would like to read The Fishermen of Fisherfield, copies are available to borrow on request.   The name, An-Airidh, translates into a shieling, which refers to a mountain pasture used for the grazing of cattle in summer.

In the 1960’s, an opportunity to build a new house presented itself and thus the original part of our present home, An-Airidh, was built.

In the 1990’s, James and his wife, Catherine, took over the property from James’ father.  They refurbished and extended the property and turned it into a guest house.

Now James and Catherine’s son, Alex Macleod, has taken over the property, Alex works from home with his partner Alan.

In September 2022 James sadly passed away, however Catherine still lives in our family home and helps out while keeping us on our toes!
